Our Professional Cockroach Treatments
The type of cockroach treatment we carry out depends on whether the problem is large cockroach species or small cockroach species. Although large cockroaches are often covered in our general pest control treatment, if it is a major infestation of a large cockroach species or a problem with a small cockroach species such as the German cockroach, a specialist cockroach treatment will be required.
American Cockroach
German Cockroach
Large cockroach species such as American cockroaches and Australian cockroaches typically live outside in the garden, in drains and around the garbage, but also under the house and in the roof void. They typically come into the house looking for food and shelter.
Our large cockroach treatment includes a complete perimeter spray around the outside of the house and around potential entry points, as well as around drains and garbage bins. We then blow insecticide powder into the roof void and sub-floor (if you have one) and spray the around perimeter of internal rooms.
Small cockroach species such the German cockroach and brown banded cockroach, only live indoors. Treatments for these “domestic” cockroaches usually requires a combination of sprays, dusts and cockroach baits. However, as Serial Pest Control we primarily focus on sprays are our primary control product as this delivers the fastest (essentially instant) results.
Cockroach baits can be useful if you cannot find the cockroach hiding places, but at Serial Pest Control we take extra time to find all the hiding places, as we know a directly application of insecticide gets the best (and fastest) results.
In certain areas (such as around electrical goods and food storage areas), we may use alternative products such as baits and dusts. As well as finding and treating German cockroach hiding places, we also spray the perimeter of each room as a precaution.
Cockroach baits can be useful to target hidden cockroach places. The bait consists of an attractive cockroach food and slow acting insecticide. Cockroaches come out of their hiding places to feed and eat the bait. It’s slow acting so that the cockroaches have time to return to their “cockroach nest” before it starts to have an effect.
These dying cockroaches spread the insecticide to other cockroaches in the harbourage in their vomit and droppings – yes, cockroaches eat each other’s vomit and droppings! As a result, it delivers complete cockroach control. However, it can take several days to eliminate the nest and for large infestations it may take more than one application.
As we rely on sprays to deliver the main performance element of our treatments, the impact on the cockroach population should be immediate. Any cockroaches hit with the spray will die within an hour or two and any cockroaches not hit directly will pick up the insecticide when walking across treated surfaces. In most cases the cockroach problem will be eliminated withing 24 hours. The sprays we use deliver long lasting performance, which means any new cockroaches will be prevented from taking up residence in your home for many months.
What our customer say…
What are the signs of a cockroach problem?
It’s not uncommon to see one or two large cockroaches, especially in summer. These are most likely accidental invaders from outside. But if you start to see more cockroaches, especially young cockroaches (cockroach nymphs, the ones without wings), you probably have a cockroach problem.
For small cockroaches, such as the German cockroach, they are a lot more difficult to spot (the young cockroaches and only a couple of millimetres long) and like to stay in their hiding places.
Of course, there’s the well-known rule – “For every cockroach you see, there are 20 you don’t!”
And as cockroaches are generally nocturnal, sometimes you need to keep your eyes open for the other potential signs of a cockroach problem:
Large cockroach droppings are dark, oval shaped, about 1-2 in diameter, often found in a group. They will often be found on cupboard shelves and under appliances.
Small cockroaches, such as German cockroaches, tend to leave brown spots rather than solid droppings. These brown spots tend to be in groups (they like to poo together!), often in the corners of cupboards. As they don’t travel far from their hiding places, if you spot these marks, there will be a “cockroach nest” nearby. will often leave visible brown spots on the surfaces where they rest and hide.
Cockroach egg case (ootheca) are brown cylindrical cases around 1-2 cm long, which contain a number of eggs. When the baby cockroaches are ready to hatch the ootheca splits open. Some species carry the ootheca until the eggs are ready to hatch, other species place the egg case in a safe place.
NB. Cockroach egg cases hiding in cardboard boxes are a common way cockroaches are brought into houses.

Cockroaches will eat almost anything and so in addition to eating food materials they can also cause damage to a wide range of materials, in particular paper, cardboard and clothing. Chewed labels on bottles and jars in the pantry, are a sign there are cockroaches about.
A cockroach infestation has a distinct, unpleasant smell. Once you’ve been told the cause of the smell, you’ll always be able to recognise it. It is most likely you will pick up the odour in cupboards or under sinks.
Tips to prevent a cockroach infestation
Cockroaches set up home near to food and moisture, so if you eliminate sources of food and moisture you will make your home less attractive to cockroaches.
- Clear up spilled food
- Don’t leave pet food bowls out (especially with food in)
- Don’t leave unwashed dishes on the side after meals
- Make sure food is stored in tight fitting, “ant proof” containers
- Rubbish should be put in sealed bags before placing in the bin
- Fix any leaking taps or pipework
It also makes sense to try and prevent cockroaches coming into your home in the first place.
- Make sure insect screens are well fitted
- Seal any gaps or cracks around window and doors
- Check incoming cardboard boxes for cockroaches and egg cases.
