Wasp Pest Control Treatments
How we deal with wasp nests depends on the species and the type of nest. The nests of Australian wasps are exposed and relatively small. We can hit this directly with fast acting insecticide, either with our spray equipment or long range aerosol. For European wasp nests, which are normally protected (either by a protective shroud or underground) and have a single, small entrance, we need to be more precise with our treatment. Typically, we insert a length of tubing into the nest entrance and blow insecticide powder into the nest.
Wasp Baits
Sometimes you may have wasps causing a problem, but the nest isn’t on your property. European wasps can fly over 100m from their nest to a food source. In such situations, the nest can be difficult to locate a treat. However, by using wasp baits, we can still deal with the problem. Foraging wasps take the wasp bait containing a slow acting insecticide back to the nest, where it is fed to other wasps in the nest. Within a couple of days the nest will be eliminated.
Safety
Safety is our number one priority when dealing with wasps – for ourselves as well as our clients! We will always wear the necessary safety gear, which is essential when dealing with European wasp nests. It is also important that people and pets are kept well clear of the nests during the treatment, ideally indoors. Sometimes we will try and carry out the treatment later in the day, when the wasps are back in the nest and tend to be calmer.

What to expect from our wasp treatments?
Our direct nest treatments of Australian wasp nests will kill the wasps in a matter of seconds. For European wasps, it can take longer and depends on the size of the nest. Sometimes we may be blowing insecticide into the nest for 30 seconds or more. Typically, activity ceases in European wasp nests within a matter of minutes. If we have to bait a wasp nest, it may take a day or two for the wasp numbers to diminish around your property. Nests will be eliminated in around 3 days.
Wasp Nest Removal
Wasp nest removal of Australian paper wasps is fairly straight forward. As long as they can be reached, once the wasps are dead, the nest can simply be knocked to the ground and bagged up and placed in the bin. For above ground European wasp nests, removal depends on the location. In most cases we will be able remove the nest. But if we can’t, the wasps won’t come back – the nest cannot be used again as it is coated in insecticide. For underground European wasp nests, we simply leave them in place. They are hidden underground and cause now harm. If so desired the entrance hole can be filled with soil.

Queen wasps start to build their nests in spring. When you are walking around your home, look up under the eaves and other sheltered locations as these are favourite places to build nests. Far easier to eliminate small nests with have one or two wasps, rather than deal with a mature nest in Autumn which may have hundreds of thousands of angry wasps!

As you move from Spring, through Summer to Autumn, if there are wasp nests on your property or nearby, the numbers of wasps on your property will continue to increase, as the wasp nest population grows. European wasp particularly like soft drinks, BBQs and petfood, so spotting a wasp on these foods will indicate you have a nest nearby.

Preventing wasps building their nests around your home by removing or trimming back vegetation around your home. Australian paper wasps will often build their nests under branches and large leaves.
Remove food sources attractive to wasps
Australian paper wasps typically feed on nectar, insects and spiders. However, European wasps are attracted to meat and soft drinks. Don’t leave drinks and food outside unattended and don’t left uneaten petfood outside.
Keep wasps out of the house
Insect screens are the best way to keep wasps and other insects out of the house.
Types of Wasp in Sydney
There are two main types of wasp in Sydney, the paper wasps and the mud-dauber and potter wasps. The paper wasps build their nest from “paper”, essentially wood and plant material. The size of their nests can range from several hundred individuals for Australian paper wasps to hundreds of thousands of individuals in European wasp nests. Mud-dauber and potter wasps are large solitary wasps which hunt for spiders and caterpillars. They paralyse their prey and take in back to their nest where they place it inside a mud capsule, which becomes food for the wasp larva when it hatches.
There are a number of native Australian paper wasps. Most of them build relatively small, open nests, which hang from a stalk, often in a sheltered location. The different species have different levels of aggression, but they will all deliver a painful sting, with the risk of allergic reaction / analphylactic shock.
The European wasp is an invasive pest. It builds large nests both above ground and underground – in fact 80% of nests are underground. Nest can easily consist of thousands of individuals. In Europe, the nests die off during Winter. However, in Australia the nest continue to grow year on year. Sometimes the nests can grow to contain 100,000 wasps! European wasps are very aggressive and will sting multiple times when disturbed. The danger of serious allergic reaction is significant.
Theses solitary wasps build small but unsightly mud nests on the sides of walls and ceilings. They are not normally aggressive but can deliver a nasty sting. The mud nests are where they lay their eggs on the prey they catch. Each little mud capsule will contain one wasp larvae. These nests can be knocked down and squashed. If you spray them, the mud can make a mess on the walls. The trick is to try and spray the queen wasp when she returned to the nest. If you only kill the nest, the queen wasp is likely to just start building the nest again.
